Reborn: The Story of Ongava

In 1991, a diverse group of nature enthusiasts came together with a bold vision: to rehabilitate 4 unproductive cattle farms on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park and turn it into a thriving sanctuary for wildlife. This land, once struggling under harsh conditions, was reborn as Ongava, which means "rhino" in the Herero language, a fitting name for a reserve that would become a refuge for the threatened white and black rhinos.

Over the past three decades, Ongava has evolved into one of Africa's great conservation success stories. The reserve is now home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including lions, rhinos, elephants, black-faced impala, and more, all coexisting in their natural habitats. Ongava's commitment to conservation is mirrored in its dedication to research and education, with the Ongava Research Centre leading groundbreaking studies that inform and inspire conservation efforts globally.

But Ongava is more than just a haven for wildlife, it's a place where the dreams of its founders continue to thrive, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonders of Africa's wildlife in their natural environment. Green is the colour of the wild in bloom.

In a bountiful year, the quenching rain brings new vigour to the land, topping up the waterholes and painting the bush with wildflowers.

The shift in season ushers teeming herds in from the wings, the skies abound with birdlife, and the air is alive with renewal.

In Namibia we call this Green Season. Subject to the whims of nature, it runs more or less from December to March, the hottest time of year, but also the quietest on the international safari calendar.

This makes it an ideal time for a visit to Ongava, where the season unfurls in a series of close-up encounters that stir the senses. Beginning with the rain itself.

Hoped-for, planned-for, prayed-for, it arrives with a tentative shimmer of cloud that shields the sun in the late afternoon.

Like an army on the march, the storm clouds gather and align, darkening the sky before the first heavy drops signal the start of the salvo.

From the comfort of our expansive viewing deck, a bushveld thunderstorm is a pulse-quickening experience that reveals nature's untamed fury, in the same light as its benevolence. Rain, in the wild, is a giver of life.

One of the great joys of Green Season at Ongava is the greater likelihood of seeing the new brood make their debut.

Tail-flicking young taking their first steps in an impala nursery, or an elephant calf, shielded by its matriarch, stomping its way to a waterhole.

At the same time, the greener the grazing, the more young on the land, the greater the prospects of seeing predators on the prowl.

A game drive in Green Season at Ongava heightens the adrenaline and clears the air for that perfect shot — on camera, of course.

Dampened by the rains, the earth is less prone to stirring up dust in the presence of wildlife, and the soft, diffuse light from overcast skies is ideal for capturing vivid detail, of a lion on the hunt or a bird on the wing.

On September 21, 2024, Ongava came alive with a celebration dedicated to one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered animals, the rhinoceros. This World Rhino Day, we invited guests to join us in honouring these majestic creatures and learning more about our efforts to ensure their future.

The day began at the Ongava Discovery Centre, the hub of our conservation storytelling. All afternoon activities started here, providing guests with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Ongava’s history and the vital work we do to protect rhinos. The exhibits at the Discovery Centre showcase our journey from the reserve’s inception to our current role as a beacon of rhino conservation. Through engaging infographics, guests could trace the story of Ongava's rhino population, understanding both the triumphs and challenges along the way. It was a moment to reflect on the importance of conserving these animals and the impact each visitor can make. 

The festivities continued with a memorable treat, a stunning rhino-shaped cake, symbolising the strength and resilience of these creatures. Gathering around the cake, guests engaged in conversations, exchanged stories, and a shared sense of commitment to the cause. It was a lighthearted yet poignant way to celebrate the beauty of rhinos and the critical need to protect them.

As the sun set over the horizon, the day’s activities took a creative turn. Our guests were invited to a special dinner where each person received a mini canvas and paints to create their own rhino-themed artwork. This hands-on activity encouraged everyone to connect with the essence of the rhino, translating their feelings onto canvas. The diversity of the artwork reflected the many ways people appreciate and value these incredible animals, each painting a testament to the personal connections made throughout the day.

Along with their canvases, guests were given a note detailing two key messages: a brief history of Ongava’s rhinos and a reminder that part of their stay directly contributes to ongoing conservation efforts. This note underscored that every guest plays a part in the bigger picture, helping to ensure that rhinos can thrive in their natural habitat. For many, it was a meaningful reminder of the positive impact their visit had, not just for themselves but for the future of the rhinos.

World Rhino Day at Ongava was more than just a celebration, it was an experience that deepened understanding, inspired creativity, and reinforced the importance of conservation. Through storytelling, art, and community, we brought together guests and team members in a shared commitment to protect these magnificent animals. Getting to Ongava is straightforward and rewarding. The reserve is approximately a 4-hour drive from Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. This scenic drive takes you through the picturesque Namibian countryside, offering glimpses of the diverse landscapes that characterise the region.

For those preferring a quicker journey, Ongava is also accessible by air. A short flight from Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport to the Ongava airstrip is available, which significantly reduces travel time and offers an aerial view of the stunning terrain below. Upon arrival, a brief transfer will bring you to the heart of the reserve.

The reserve is a year-round destination, with each season providing unique opportunities to experience its wildlife and landscapes. The dry season from May to October is particularly popular for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes, making them easier to spot.

As the evening unfolded, the head guide at Tented Camp, Tuli, added another layer of magic to the night. Committed to ensuring the safety of all guests, Tuli conducts diligent patrols around the area. His vigilance provides peace of mind, allowing everyone to relax and immerse themselves fully in the experience.

But Tuli’s contributions don’t stop there. As night falls and the sky transforms into a blanket of stars, he takes the opportunity to share his passion for the cosmos. With his expert knowledge, he introduces guests to the wonders of the night sky, pointing out constellations and explaining their names and stories. His engaging storytelling not only enhances the evening but also helps guests connect more deeply with the beautiful element of the Namibian landscape.

This recent makeover, inspired by a legendary interior designer Tracy Kelly, has deepened the connection between luxury and nature, creating a space where the boundaries between indoors and outdoors blur seamlessly. 

Bold Teal Accents and Breathtaking Views: Little Ongava's New Look

The transformation begins with the walkway, which now serves as a continuous extension of the breathtaking surroundings. Bamboo blinds, thoughtfully staggered when open, allow guests to control their views, offering framed glimpses of the stunning exterior. This design ensures that the beauty of the outside is always present, even as you enjoy the warm, inviting glow of the interior at sunset. The interplay between these two spaces creates a harmonious experience, where the natural world and luxurious comfort come together effortlessly.

A striking element of the redesign is the use of teal on the headboards and accent pieces within the rooms. This bold color acts as an exclamation mark, inviting guests to pause and soak in their surroundings. Tracy Kelly of Tracy Kelly Design was tasked with upgrading and refurbishing the existing Little Ongava camp: “It was a small refurbishment, but an impactful one,” says Tracy: “I was very fortunate in that my clients gave me the opportunity to express myself and make changes I felt would best enhance the buildings - we were not making structural changes to the lodge, but primarily focusing on colour, soft furnishings and new layouts. Previously the interiors were bright and colourful, with the inspiration and colour palette drawn from the Purple Pod Terminalia tree – we changed that and went more grounded - more natural and neutral – yet so elegant.”

She waxes lyrical: “From the deep azure of the sky to the sun-kissed foliage on a hot autumn day, that’s the perfect palette.”
